SUBSTANCE USE CONCERNS
There is no judgment here.
Substance use is rarely just about the substance. It is often about pain, pressure, exhaustion, untreated mental health conditions, or environments that asked more than a person could give. We meet patients exactly where they are.
Guided by Light, Grounded by Care.
Understanding
What are Substance Use Concerns?
Substance use disorder is a treatable medical condition in which the use of alcohol or drugs has begun to affect health, relationships, work, or wellbeing. It is not a character flaw, and treatment does not require having 'hit a bottom.'
Signs & Symptoms
Common signs
Using more than intended, or for longer than planned
Strong cravings or urges
Difficulty cutting down despite wanting to
Spending significant time obtaining, using, or recovering
Continued use despite consequences
Conflict at work, school, or home
Increased tolerance
Withdrawal symptoms when stopping or reducing
Loss of interest in things that once mattered
Why It Happens
What contributes to it
Substance use disorder develops from a combination of genetics, stress, trauma, untreated mental health conditions, and changes in the brain's reward system. Many people use substances while trying to cope with pain that hasn't been addressed.

Next Steps
When to reach out
If substance use is affecting your life — or someone in your life is concerned — reaching out is a step worth taking. There is no need to wait until things are worse.
Morning Light Wellness offers medication-assisted treatment for alcohol use disorder, and ongoing maintenance care for patients already stabilized on medication for opioid use disorder. Patients requiring detoxification, residential care, or initiation of buprenorphine for opioid use disorder will be supported with referrals to appropriate programs. Care is provided in an outpatient setting; patients in acute crisis may be better served by a higher level of care.
If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a psychiatric emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. To speak with a trained crisis counselor, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
